For America’s volunteer fire, rescue, and EMS companies, the backbone of America’s ability to respond to disaster, recruiting and retaining those willing to answer the call has become a challenge. Traditionally built on stable populations with solid, long-term community ties, volunteer recruitment is now challenged by today’s transient workforce and the growing demands on everyone’s time. And while attracting those with motivation and a sense of commitment becomes more difficult, the increasing demands of homeland security puts additional pressure on each department’s resources. |
